The fight for excise commissioner ceased. It should not be forgotten however that Sew Rochelle has the beet record In the county for Imposing the maximum fees. For many years the voters decldec in favor of a policy of one saloon to tOO population with the maximum license fees. Through death and treachery the vote was not always carried out. It was Impossible to select the saloons to be lioenaet without causing great dissatisfaction.

There really Is no way to pick out to saloons out of 00 and legalise them with perfect Justice. The one man who has fought the battle out from start to flnbhln behalf of the anti-saloon element is Joseph B. Stephen son. As excise commissioner he has done his duty faithfully for the past three years. lu a most trying position he plucklly carried out the platform on which he was elected mid to-day he stands higher than ever iu the esteem ami gratitude of men of all shades of political belief.

Tax Pabaqhaph takes this oeriiflion to thank Mr. Stephenson In behalf of the citizens of New Rochelle for his earnest self sacrifice for the sake of good government. We hope thut his example may be followed. It caunot be truthfully said of New Rochelle that her best dtlsens are not Interested In the municipal government. For ast lea of I he Peaes.

Then are now In nomination for the office of justice of the peace four candidates Augustine Smith, democrat; Justice Henry A. Wolff, Independent democrat; William Xolbe, prohibitionist; and P. E. O'Connor, republican. Last year Mr.

Smith was defeated by Justioe W. L. Thompson. If the publicans had ns strong a candidate this year they might count on another victory but, Instead, a large percentage of the republican vote will be given to Mr. Smith.

Mr. Smith Is an energetic young man. He Is foreman of Relief Engine Co. and stands well in the community Justice Wolff will receive many republican and most of the dctnocmtlc German vote. Justice Wolff would have been left on the ticket, the democratic leaders say, If lie had not allowed the Sheehan faction to use bis name.

Although no prohibition aandldsta as such was uvur elected to office In New Rochelle Mr. Kolbe and his friends may make a stirring eanvass this year. For the past few years the republican nominations have been the beet. The Oltlxens League assisted to elect the republican candidates. The banner of good local government was borne by the republicans.

In- the main this Is still true and for this reason the republicans who care for the good reputation of their party will make the vote for Davenport, Elderkln and Morgan as large and that for OConnor as small as possible. Had the Baines bill not passed then Is little doubt but the old $35 license would have been restored In New Rochelle. The whole strength of the high license movement was broken by the treachery of one of the aron elected on the definite platform of one saloon to 500 population. We do not mean that Mr. Hearing would not do his best to keep the fee at the maximum If elected, but he would be la a minority.

The snow storm on Sunday and Monday was the heaviest of the season. When the rain bgan to fall on Monday about a foot of snow was on the ground. It disappeared rapidly, however. We hope that George D. Leech will oonaent to a re-election as trustee Supervisor Davenport, Town Clerk Elderkln and Beeetver Morgan have made excellent records.

They deserve re election. The street railway company actually cleared Its tracks after the snow storm this week. Rev. 0. A Beaudry should be elected overseer of the poor.
