Tom Conway and Paul More- BOYS BASKETBALL POWER RANKINGS AND NOTEBOOK Red Raiders take over top ranking spot McCahey brothers helping to rebuild Clarkstown South Kevin Devaney Jr. The Journal News North Rockland takes over as the No. 1 team in the county after three wins this week. The entire ranks were shaken up after an active week. Here's the latest Power rankings 1.

North Rockland (9-1): The Red Raiders have played the most consistent basketball this season. They face a very talented Gorton team on the road tomorrow at noon. 2. Albertus Magnus (9-2): The emergence of guards Terrence Michalak and Ryan Sullivan has helped the Falcons begin to separate from the pack in Class B. The seniors sparked Albertus on both ends in Friday's win at Nanuet.

3. Tappan Zee (7-6): The Dutchmen cooled off this week with a 12-point loss to Spring Valley. Tap-pan Zee didn't manage a 3-pointer in the game, which they cannot do if they expect to contend. 4. Pearl River (7-3): Now that Matt Grossbard is back, the Pirates are surging.

They've won three straight, highlighted by an overtime win over Hastings and Thursday's win at Nanuet 5. Nanuet (10-4): The Golden Knights ran into two hot shooting teams this week in losses to Pearl River and Albertus Magnus. They both scored 75 points against a Nanuet team that had allowed over 60 just twice. Power rankings are based on results reported to Vie Journal News through Friday. Noteworthy Spotlight on: The McCahey brothers.

Kevin and Mike McCahey symbolize the past and future, of a rebuilding at Clarkstown South. Kevin McCahey has been a pillar in the program. Along with Doug Conway and Kyle Sanders, Kevin is a senior in his fourth season on varsity, and he's averaging 14.1 points per game. went from not making sectionals and being at the bottom to being a competitive 6-14 when they were freshman," South coach Christopher Meyers said. "As sophomores, we made the sections and won a game.

Then last year we got a league co-championship. If we can win a league championship, it's a good foundation for our program. "This has gone from a place where we used to lose a lot of kids to the Jersey schools to where kids know they can come and play and be competitive in Section 1 basketball." Mike McCahey is one of Section l's top prospects. The 6-foot-3 freshman is averaging 10.4 points per game, and is coming off a career-high seven 3-point-ers in Friday's win over lona Prep B. "He's got the capability of doing that" Meyers said.

"He's a dead-eye shooter who we expect big things out of." Looking ahead: League showdowns. Two games that could go a long way in deciding league championships are set for this week. On Thursday, Pearl River and Albertus Magnus square off for the second time in six days. They're each in pursuit of the League III-C championship. Clarkstown South will travel to North Rockland on Friday in a key League I-West showdown.

They're the only two teams in the league with records over .500. Free throws: Nanuet might have lost its two games in its own tournament this week. But the Golden Knights still feel poised to make a run in the postseason. "I think we're a pretty good team and well be a tough out in the sectionals," Nanuet coach David Masterson said. "We can't focus on one or two losses to rival teams.

That's not the be-all, end-all of the season." Albertus Magnus forward Francis Lopez is still recovering from breaking a bone in his left foot The senior was on crutches and in an air-cast this weekend and hopes to return by the Class playoffs. Spring Valley sophomore Terry Burtus is steadily emerging as one of the area's rising stars. He's guided the Tigers to three wins in four games, highlighted by a 22-point effort against Yonkers and 21 points vs. Tappan Zee. Nanuet center Mike Whalen missed Friday's game with Albertus after suffering an elbow injury in Thursday's loss to Pearl River.

The 6-3 Whalen, who is averaging more than seven points and eight rebounds per game, will likely miss two more games. Staff writer Kevin Devaney Jr. writes a weekly boys basketball notebook. Reach him at kdevaneylohud.com. Read his Varsity Insider blog at varsityinsider.lohudblogs.com.
