McManus of South Nyack. Prude McManus, Pharmaceutical who Society organized of Rock- the land, died in Nyack Hospital on Tuesday. He was 89. McManus opened the McManus Pharmacy on Main Street in 1946 and ran it for more than 40 years. The store still carries his name.

"They don't make them like him any more," said Keith Taylor, who was born and raised in Nyack and knew McManus for many years. "He was a very giving person who helped a lot of people in town who couldn't afford it," Taylor said. "He could care less if you had a dollar or a million dollars. He was a very generous and caring person." In a 1993 Journal News interview, McManus recalled his store and one of its celebrity customers. "I was very active in those days.

I formed the first Pharmaceutical Society in Rockland," McManus said. "When they had the polio drive, I represented the pharmacists in the McManus said he remembered when the late actress Helen Hayes MacArthur would come into the store. "She was a very down-to-earth person," he said. "You would never know she was a celebrity. She would come in occasionally to pick up off-the-street items." McManus was president of the county pharmaceutical society for three years and later became very active in the Nyack Senior Citizen Club, serving as its president.

It was the biggest of seven in Orangetown when he stepped down from the presidency in 1980, having 400 members. He gave up the position at age 80, saying i it was time for a younger senior to take over. McManus was an avid bowler and sponsored many bowling teams through his store. He enjoyed boating and was a member of the Tarrytown Boat Club for many years. For more than 50 years, he was a member of the Nyack Volunteer Fire Department, serving in Jackson Hose Company 3.

He was also a member of the Nyack Lions Club and Haverstraw Elks Lodge 877 in Haverstraw. He was a devoted Yankees fan. McManus was born Feb. 15, 1913, in Orangeburg to Matthew and Ella Haley McManus. He graduated from the old Haverstraw High School, where he served as student council president and was active in sports.

He received a degree in 1946 from the Columbia University School of Pharmacy. Betty T. Carlin, 75, of Winchester, VA, died Sunday, November 10, 2002 in Winchester Medical Center. Mrs. Carlin was born August 8, 1927 in Cumberland, MD, the daughter of William and Virginia Taylor Thomas. She worked in the Administrative Department of the FBI and retired after six years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and former President of the St. Paul's Altar and Rosary Society in Congers, NY. She was a graduate and Valedictorian of Capon Bridge High School. She had earned a four- year scholarship to West Virginia University, from which she graduated. She married Leo F.

Carlin on June 4, 1949 in Brooklyn, NY. Surviving with her husband are two sons: Michael Carlin of Augusta, WV and Steve Carlin of Livingston Manor, NY; a sister, Ann Taylor of Slanesville, WV; a brother Robert Thomas of Shawneeland, WV; nine grandchildren and 10 great-granchildren. The Funeral was Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

He was 90. The son of William and Clara Potts Hamilton, he was born January 19, 1912, in New Hempstead, NY. He was the beloved husband of the late Elaine Demarest Hamilton, who died in 1987. An apple famer until the 1950's, Bob retired from Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, NY in 1974. For many years Bob and Elaine enjoyed their shared interest in antiques, traveling around the Northeast buying and selling, while making many friends.

He was a 70-year member of the Hillcrest Fire Company in Spring Valley, NY. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Bob is survived by his son Robert P. Hamilton and his wife Linda of Blooming Grove, NY; daughter Andrea Hamburger and husband Michael of Cornwall-on-Hudson; daughter Jill Hamilton of Gardiner, NY; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
